Federal Casework

I consider one of my most important responsibilities to be helping Middle Tennesseans when they are having problems with a federal agency.  A federal agency is an organization that part of the Executive branch of the U.S Government such as the Social Security Administration (SSA), the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), the Postal Service (USPS), and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

Here are 5 quick questions to help you determine if my staff and I can assist you with a problem:

1. Do you reside in the Sixth Congressional District of the State of Tennessee?
Congressional courtesy, ethics rules and propriety dictate that each Member of Congress has the honor and responsibility to serve his or her own constituents. If you aren’t sure if you live in my district, look at this map or click here.

2. Does your case involve a Federal agency?
As a Federal representative, I am able to make inquiries to federal agencies. If your case involves state, county, or local government, your public school district or other public agencies, please visit http://www.capitol.tn.gov/legislators/ for contact information on the state official you should contact. For your convenience, a list of many state, local and community-based organizations is available here.

3. Does the case you are concerned about involve you?
Due to privacy laws, members of Congress must have the written on behalf of the constituent they are trying to assist.  However, my staff is happy to listen to your concerns regarding another constituent’s issue. Please contact one of my local district offices and explain the situation so that it can be determined if they can be assistance. My offices can then contact the constituent directly to obtain their written consent.

4. Is your situation a legal dispute?
As a member of Congress, I am unable to become involved in court cases or legal issues. This restriction applies to both civil and criminal matters.

5. Is your case within the agency’s normal processing time?
It is rare that a case can be “sped up,” but if you believe your situation merits faster processing, please contact one of my local district offices. My staff will discuss your situation and help you determine the proper strategy.

If you are still unsure whether I can assist you with your case, please contact one of my local district offices.  My staff will discuss your situation and work with you to determine the best course of action.
