County History and Information:
Smith County, Tennessee was established in 1799, and was named for General Daniel Smith, former Secretary of the “Territory of the United States south of the Ohio.” In 1804 a heated election was held for selection of a permanent county seat. It is believed that Colonel William Walton, a Revolutionary veteran, who favored the choice of Carthage and operated a tavern, influenced the choice of Carthage by furnishing an abundant supply of whiskey. Smith County is the home of former Vice-President Al Gore. It was also home to Cordell Hull, best known as the longest-serving Secretary of State, holding the position for 11 years from 1933 to 1944. The county is also known for Cordell Hull Lake.
