County History and Information:
Rutherford County was formed in 1803 and named in honor of Griffith Rutherford, a North Carolina colonial legislator and a Revolutionary War general who served as President of the Council of the Territory of Tennessee before Tennessee attained statehood. The Civil War Battle of Stones River occurred in Rutherford County and was one of the bloodiest battles of the western theater. Rutherford County is the geographic center of the state. The county seat, Murfreesboro was the capital of Tennessee from 1818 to 1826. The county is the home to Middle Tennessee State University, which has the state's largest enrollment of undergraduate students.
