
County History and Information:
Jackson County was established on November 6, 1801 and named in honor of Andrew Jackson, the 1st President of the United States from Tennessee. It is known as the Switzerland of the Cumberlands because of the abundant wildlife exist in the county, which includes deer, quail, bass, catfish, the whooping crane, Canadian geese in the winter and the American Bald Eagle. Agriculture has always been a mainstay of Jackson County. At one time 172,000 of 194,000 acres of the county were devoted to farming. Jackson County has one of the most important historic sites in the upper Cumberlands: Fort Blount, which built in 1794 to protect settlers using the Avery Trace road from attacks by the Cherokee Indians.
