Cannon County

County History and Information:
Cannon County was established on January 31, 1836. The county was to be originally named after Chief Justice John Marshall, but was eventually named after Newton Cannon, who was governor of Tennessee from 1835 to 1839. The county seat, Woodbury, was named after Levi Woodbury, who was U.S. Secretary of the Treasury from 1834 to 1841. The area is well known for folk decorative arts.
